speedbar-default-position is a variable defined in `speedbar.el'.
Its value is

left-right

Documentation:
Default position of the speedbar frame.
Possible values are 'left, 'right or 'left-right.
If value is 'left-right, the most suitable location is
determined automatically.

You can customize this variable.
