mode-name is a variable defined in `C source code'.
Its value is
"Fundamental"

global value is

  • Automatically becomes buffer-local when set.
  • This variable may be risky if used as a file-local variable.

Documentation:
Pretty name of current buffer's major mode.
Usually a string, but can use any of the constructs for `mode-line-format',
which see.
Format with `format-mode-line' to produce a string value.
