line-number-display-limit

line-number-display-limit is a variable defined in `C source code'.
Its value is

nil

Documentation:
Maximum buffer size for which line number should be displayed.
If the buffer is bigger than this, the line number does not appear
in the mode line. A value of nil means no limit.

You can customize this variable.
